Project Description

family portrait from early 20th century

Visible deterioration of photographs can manifest as tarnishing in dark areas known as ‘silvering out’. This photo was a particularly severe case with dark areas around the edges, probably caused by exposure to atmospheric contaminants or improper storage materials.

To correct the damage, selective level adjustment and airbrushing was carried out to restore natural depth and separation of subjects from background. Detailed retouching and contrast improved for the image as a whole. Finally the photo was printed on fine art paper with a slight sepia tone in keeping with the vintage look and feel of the original, and framed with conservation grade materials.
